Welcome to the Centre for Genomics Gwalior

Rapid progress in genome science and a glimpse into its potential applications have spurred observers to predict that biology will be the foremost science of the 21st century.Technology and resources generated by the Human Genome Project and other genomic researches, already conducted are having major impact on researchs across the life sciences. The science of Genomics is not only being considered as an area of global concern but has relevance to the local needs also, be an endemic disease (pathogenic), local agricultural produce or the environmental issues. Thus, its scopes are far and wide. It is the need of the time to give greater emphasis on both teaching and research in this area to generate trained manpower that can lead our country towards a more competitive, resourceful and confident future and give us a firm place among the world leaders in the area of genomic science.

Objectives of the Centre for Genomics

For Today & Promises of Tomorrow

The Centre for Genomics was established in the year 2003 under an ambitious programme to bring Jiwaji University to the forefront of Indian Universities through its teaching and research programmes in one of the most advanced and upcoming area of biological science, the ‘Science of Genomics’, with major emphasis on Human Molecular Genetics and Medical Biotechnology. To achieve the above goal, following major objectives were set to work on at the Centre:
are as follows:

  • Establishment of a Centre for advance research in genome structure and functions of different prokaryotic and eukaryotic models, including human.

  • To conduct clinical and molecular investigations on various human inherited and non-inherited genetic disorders (Monogenic and Multifactorial).

  • Establishment of a Regional Genetic Centre for Screening, Molecular Diagnosis and Counseling of Genetic and non-Genetic diseases, including Thalassemia and Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

  • Studies on genomic diversity of human populations with special reference to the diverse tribal groups of M.P.

  • Studies on the molecular pathogenesis of gall stone and gallbladder carcinoma.

  • Molecular genetics and clinical investigations on the epidemics, like tuberculosis, malaria and other pathogenic disease and genetic identification & molecular characterization of the pathogens.

  • Study on animal (wild life) and plant biodiversity and conservation of natural genetic resources with special reference to the rapidly depleting populations of endangered animal species and existence of rich plant resources in the state of  M.P.
